Herman George Scheffauer was born in San Francisco, California on February 3, 1876 (although many reference sources incorrectly give his year of birth as 1878), the son of John George Scheffauer and Maria Theresa Eisele. Trained as an architect, Scheffauer worked in that field until coming to prominence as a poet in 1904. A protegé of Ambrose Bierce, Scheffauer was an active member of the Bohemian Club, writing the club's Grove Play in 1908. Scheffauer lived in London for a number of years, where he met and married his wife, the poet Ethel Talbot, in 1912. After a brief return to San Francisco, he moved to Germany in 1915. Scheffauer committed suicide after murdering his secretary, Katherine von Meyer, in Berlin on October 7, 1927.
